The 20th Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition will begin in the capital on Thursday presenting more value added local garments to the international importers.
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasin, will inaugurate the biggest annual exposition of Bangladesh garment industry at Hotel Sonargaon in the morning.
At a press conference on Wednesday, leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers Exporters Association, the organiser of Batexpo, hoped that the exhibition would help offset the recent impacts of global recession in apparel business.
‘We are expecting fresh negotiations at the Batexpo, as it is being held in such a period when there is hope that the global recession is either easing or ending, said Abdus Salam Murshedy, the president of the association.
He hoped that that at least 200 buyers from Europe, USA, Hong Kong, Japan and other countries would visit the two-day long fair. ‘We have been sure that more buyers are coming to Dhaka this time than the previous occasion.’
The BGMEA president said that as the members of BGMEA produce diversified garment products, the exhibition would showcase all varieties of garments that are exported from Bangladesh.
Woven garments constitute 48 per cent of the country’s $12.7 billion worth readymade garment export. Shipments of sweater and light knitted wear account for the rest of the earning.
Murshedy told reporters that some 62 local and foreign companies would showcase their products and services in 82 stalls in the exhibition. Manufacturers of woven garments, knitted wear including sweater, fabric and accessories suppliers, bankers and other allied service providers have booked the stalls, he informed.
‘Buyers will find advanced versions of denim products, diversities in woven or cut and sew garments, light knitted wear and sweaters,’ Murshedy said.
He claimed that BGMEA represents entire woven garment manufacturing sector while more than 90 per cent of country’s sweater manufacturing units and many of the light knitwear manufacturers are affiliated with the association.
Alongside the exhibition, two industrial seminars and cultural programmes will be held.
The leader of the opposition in the parliament, Khaleda Zia, will attend the closing ceremony as chief guest on Friday.

In late 2009 the business community and economists often remark that the level of investment in the economy is too low. The Minister of Finance has recently expressed such concerns. What they mean is that to create jobs for the young people entering the labour force, to raise the productivity of workers, and to make the economy grow faster there has to be much more investment than is now taking place. We examine in this article some of the evidence that it is low and review some of the reasons for this. Perhaps by understanding the reasons it really is possible to figure out how to increase investment. Read More »
